PROGRAM NOTE
Divertimento (2010) for Saxophone Quartet is a suite of three movements, each spirited and light in character.
I. Prelude dually features a whimsical, fast-paced melody and a more contemplative, lyrical song. In II. Code Red, I take an octatonic 4-note cell and spin out from it a variety of motives; as this movement’s name implies, many of these musical gestures are rather intense, frenetic, and anxious. III. Romp is the jazziest of the set, with seductive and sultry undertones.
