PROGRAM NOTE

Blue Embers (2012) is a bright, quirky work scored for flute (doubling piccolo), soprano saxophone, and piano. While the materials are often rhythmically busy, the textures are tightly controlled throughout, with a propulsive groove driving forward at a leisurely pace. The rhythms and jazz-tinged harmonies tip their hat to the jazz fusion of Dave Grusin, Pat Metheny, David Benoit, Maria Schneider, & The Yellowjackets.
