DIVERTIMENTO for Saxophone Quartet is a suite of three movements that are each spirited and light in character. Each movement is a caricature, with a specific personality and style all its own.
I. “Prelude” dually features a whimsical, fast-paced melody and a more contemplative, lyrical song. In II. “Code Red,” I take an octatonic 4-note cell and spin out from it a variety of motives; as this movement’s name implies, many of these musical gestures are rather intense, frenetic, and anxious. III. “Romp” is the jazziest of the set, with seductive and sultry undertones.
