PROGRAM NOTE

Sonata for Bassoon & Piano draws its musical content from direct, uncomplicated melodies, a sentimental harmonic language, and quirky rhythmic material. The work is cast in three distinct movements, each of which may be performed separately. I. Shifting Winds is a carefree song that displays the bassoon’s lyrical capabilities. II. Autumn Nocturne is an earthy, poignant reflection on the waning of the year. III. Flurries, the most ebullient of the set, derives its name from a pun: the title suggests both a light, quick snowfall as well as a flurry of notes. The piece is dedicated with gratitude to my friend Michael Elderkin.
